Ingredient of the Week: Sweet Orange Extract

Scientific Name: Citrus Aurantium Dulcis

Benefits/History: Sweet Orange - a favorite summer snack who’s vitamin c benefits to the body are no secret. Similarly, sweet orange is a powerhouse of benefits for the skin as well! Orange oil is used in a variety of skin care products including serums, creams, and cleansers, and is known as a natural astringent with powerful toning, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Applied topically, sweet orange oil helps soothe irritation and dryness in skin, while detoxifying congestion. Orange extract has also shown to increase collagen production, blood flow underneath the skin, and the skin’s ability to absorb vitamin C - making it an anti-aging necessity! Because of this, orange helps in reducing the appearance and depth of fine lines and wrinkles, and helps brighten dark spots and other pigmentation concerns. Orange oil is also a great addition to DIY skin care projects including body scrubs, exfoliators, and lip balms.

Skin Types: Although sweet orange’s antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities make it ideal for oily and acne-prone skin types, mature skin types can also benefit from the anti aging characteristics of the ingredient. Sweet orange is also gentle enough for sensitive skin types to enjoy the perks of the oil as well! (However, a patch test is always recommended!)
